Many large-scale projects trigger the requirement to resettle households, and while there is plentiful experience in the planning of resettlement, there is considerably less experience in the successful delivery of a resettlement project which sustainably meets the goals of improved standards of living and restored livelihoods. This training course draws on global experience across a range of industries to identify the primary challenges faced when seeking to meet these objectives, how to work with affected households to overcome these challenges, and how to assess whether these outcomes have been achieved post resettlement. It draws heavily upon the more than 40 years combined experience of the two trainers and provides opportunities for participants to share the challenges they are experiencing in a collaborative environment to draw lessons from the experience held within the room. While the trainers have much to share, they also see their role as facilitators of a conversation and nurturers of a network of resettlement specialists that will endure beyond the course.

Angela Reeman is an international social and resettlement professional with over 22 years of experience in more than 30 countries. She has been a trainer in social risk management and resettlement and livelihood restoration for many years, including delivery of various courses on behalf of the IFC, ADB, the IAIA, JICA, DFID, AusAid, and others. She is regularly engaged by the IFC to provide training to their clients, consultants, most recently in Vietnam, Nepal, and Myanmar. Angela’s training experience covers a broad spectrum of topics including social impact assessment and management, land acquisition, livelihood restoration, resettlement, Indigenous Peoples, and stakeholder engagement.

Liz Wall is an independent consultant with more than 20 years of global experience assessing and addressing social impacts associated with large projects in developing countries, almost all of which have generated some level of resettlement. As a former IFC social specialist she is an expert in the implementation of the IFC Performance Standards and has worked in over 40 countries. She has extensive resettlement experience in a wide range of contexts and countries ranging from mine sites to waste landfill facilities. Liz has lived and worked in four continents and is devoted to helping communities in developing countries experience the positive benefits and minimize the adverse impacts of natural resource sector led development.
